West Seneca, NY - Crash on I-90 W Involving Tractor Trailers

West Seneca, NY (May 28, 2025) – Late this afternoon, a serious multi-vehicle accident on the westbound side of Interstate 90 near the ramps for Route 400 created major traffic disruption and left at least one person injured. The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. on May 28 and involved several tractor-trailers, a black GMC SUV, and at least one other vehicle.

The incident led to the closure of the middle and right lanes of I-90 westbound. Only the left lane and exit ramp remained open as law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the scene. Significant delays rippled through the surrounding area. Motorists on I-90 westbound experienced stop-and-go traffic extending back to the I-290 interchange. Additional congestion was reported on Route 33 eastbound, which was backed up to Every Road, and the I-190 westbound, backed up to Smith Street.

Emergency responders treated injured victims at the scene before transporting them to local hospitals for additional evaluation and care. The exact number of people hurt has not yet been confirmed, but at least one person sustained injuries in the crash. Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in New York

Car accidents are a common issue in New York, where thousands of crashes are reported each year across the state. According to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, over 100,000 injury-causing crashes were recorded in a recent year in New York. While urban areas experience a high volume of collisions due to congestion, rural highways often see more serious outcomes.

These types of collisions often result in serious outcomes. Here’s what you should know about common causes of semi-truck accidents:

  • Driver Fatigue: Many commercial drivers work long hours, often pushing past recommended driving limits. Fatigue can impair reaction time and decision-making, leading to serious accidents, especially on highways like the I-90.
  • Improper Loading: When tractor-trailers are overloaded or unbalanced, they become harder to control. This can lead to rollovers or jackknifing, especially during sudden stops or sharp turns.
  • Mechanical Failures: Commercial trucks require routine maintenance. If brakes, tires, or other parts fail due to neglect, the risk of a crash increases significantly.
  • Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, snow, and fog can drastically reduce visibility and road traction. When large trucks are involved, these conditions can turn a minor misjudgment into a major crash.
  • Distracted Driving: Just like with passenger vehicles, distractions such as phone use or GPS navigation can lead to rear-end collisions and side swipes involving tractor-trailers.
