North Tonawanda, NY (May 13, 2025) – On the evening of May 11, emergency crews in North Tonawanda rushed to the scene of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sweeney Street and Niagara Street. The North Tonawanda Fire Department responded just after 6 p.m. following reports of a severe crash that left one vehicle overturned after rolling multiple times.

When firefighters arrived, they found one of the vehicles had sustained extensive damage after flipping several times before landing upright. Concerned bystanders stepped in to assist the driver before emergency personnel arrived on scene. The injured driver was transported to a local hospital for further care. Authorities reported the injuries were not life-threatening.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in New York

Across New York, vehicle accidents are a frequent occurrence with thousands of collisions reported each year. According to state data, New York sees over 300,000 car accidents annually, many of which result in injuries. These incidents range from minor fender-benders to severe multi-vehicle crashes that leave long-term physical and financial effects.

In the wake of a crash, it helps to understand some of the more common causes behind them. Here’s a closer look at one key factor:

Distracted Driving: Drivers taking their attention off the road—even for a few seconds—can lead to serious accidents. Texting, eating, adjusting a GPS, or interacting with passengers all reduce focus. In today’s fast-paced world, distractions are everywhere, and they continue to be one of the leading causes of car accidents in New York. Even a momentary lapse in attention can cause a vehicle to drift, miss a signal, or fail to brake in time.

Failure to Yield Right of Way: Intersections are among the most dangerous places on the road, and failure to yield is a common issue. Whether it’s running a stop sign or misjudging oncoming traffic while turning, these errors can quickly lead to a collision. Yielding rules are designed to prevent crashes, especially at busy crossings like the one on Sweeney Street.

Speeding: Driving above the posted limit shortens reaction time and increases the severity of impact. Speeding makes it harder to stop in time for red lights, curves, or other vehicles and contributes to a significant number of serious crashes across the state.

Weather Conditions: Rain, snow, and fog affect visibility and road traction. New York drivers face a variety of seasonal challenges, and without proper caution, slick roads often lead to accidents. Even a light drizzle can turn a safe corner into a hazard.
