Cheektowaga, NY - Stolen SUV Driven by Teens Crashes Near Park, Injures One

Cheektowaga, NY (July 9, 2025) – A summer evening of youth sports at Cheektowaga Town Park turned into chaos on July 8 when a stolen SUV driven by teenagers tore through the park, forcing dozens of parents and kids to scramble for safety.

Cheektowaga Police reported that around 7:30 p.m., detectives spotted a stolen 2008 Nissan Xterra at the Valero gas station on Union Road across from the park. When officers ordered the teens to exit the SUV, the young driver threw the vehicle in reverse and sped off, kicking off a brief but dangerous chase.

Officers followed the SUV as it veered into Cheektowaga Town Park, where multiple youth football and softball practices were underway. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the SUV sped along sidewalks and grassy areas with hundreds of people nearby. Due to the crowd, officers made the decision to stop the pursuit for safety reasons as the vehicle barreled through the park.

After exiting onto Greenleaf Lane, the teen driver lost control and crashed into a parked car. Inside that vehicle was a father watching his son’s soccer practice. He suffered injuries including air around his heart and chemical burns from the airbags. He was treated at ECMC and released early the next morning. The teens, two aged 14 and one aged 16, fled on foot but were caught after police set up a perimeter. They are facing multiple charges, including criminal possession of stolen property, unlawfully fleeing police, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, and assault. Due to state law, all three were released to their parents that night. The crash is being investigated.

Our thoughts go out to the injured victim and the families who witnessed this terrifying incident. We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in New York

Motor vehicle accidents remain a leading cause of injuries and fatalities throughout New York. Each year, thousands of families are impacted by reckless driving, unexpected hazards, and dangerous road conditions. In 2022 alone, more than 1,000 lives were lost on New York roads and countless others faced serious injuries that required extensive care. Knowing the risks and how to respond after a crash can make a real difference in recovery and peace of mind.

Understanding the challenges of motor vehicle crashes helps you stay prepared:

  • Common Causes of Crashes: Speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence are among the leading causes of car accidents. Even one reckless moment can lead to catastrophic injuries. Staying alert and defensive behind the wheel may help prevent tragic outcomes.
  • Frequent Injuries: From broken bones to spinal injuries, car accident victims often face long recovery periods. Some injuries, like traumatic brain injuries or internal damage, can take time to show symptoms, which is why immediate medical care is critical.
  • Costs of Recovery: The financial toll of an accident can overwhelm families. Expenses for hospital bills, lost wages, and ongoing rehabilitation can add up quickly. Insurance may not cover all these costs, putting added stress on victims and loved ones.
  • Impact on Mental Health: Beyond physical injuries, the emotional effects of an accident can be long-lasting. Anxiety, depression, and stress can interfere with daily life, work, and relationships. Support from loved ones and professionals can ease the burden.
  • Importance of Documentation: Keeping track of medical records, police reports, and accident details can strengthen your claim. Accurate documentation is vital when negotiating with insurers or pursuing legal action to secure fair compensation.
  • Legal Support Matters: An experienced car accident attorney can guide you through the process, protect your rights, and help you avoid common pitfalls. Having a legal advocate ensures you can focus on recovery without facing unfair pressure from insurance companies.

If you or your loved one were hurt in a crash, it is important to reach out to a Cheektowaga car accident attorney immediately. Acting quickly can help preserve evidence and build a strong case. From gathering witness statements to handling negotiations with insurance companies, an attorney can take on the legal burdens so you do not have to. Securing the compensation you need for medical care and lost income starts with having the right legal help on your side.
