Pedestrian Accidents in New York

In New York, pedestrian accidents are alarmingly common. Data from the state shows that thousands of pedestrians are injured on roadways each year. These incidents often occur in urban and suburban neighborhoods and can lead to long-term or even permanent injuries. Morning and evening hours are especially dangerous due to reduced visibility and distracted driving.

Understanding pedestrian-related crashes helps bring awareness to common causes and risks. Below are frequent types of injuries sustained in these accidents and how they affect victims’ lives:

  • Head Injuries: These injuries can range from concussions to skull fractures. A head injury can have lasting cognitive effects, require surgery, or demand extended therapy. Victims may experience long-term memory problems, headaches, and reduced motor function.
  • Spinal Injuries: Spinal trauma can lead to nerve damage or paralysis. These injuries often require costly, lifelong care and rehabilitation. In some cases, victims lose the ability to work or live independently.
  • Fractures: Broken bones are common when a vehicle strikes a pedestrian. Recovery involves painful healing, potential surgeries, and physical therapy. Fractures may also cause chronic pain or disability.
  • Internal Injuries: Organs may be damaged in a crash, often without immediate symptoms. Internal bleeding or ruptures are medical emergencies and may not be survivable without quick intervention.
