Car Accidents in New York

Car crashes in New York are an everyday occurrence, impacting thousands of drivers each year. In Erie County alone, a large number of collisions are recorded annually, often resulting in injuries that require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. These incidents frequently involve driver error, such as inattention, speeding, or failure to yield the right of way.

The injuries sustained in these accidents can range from mild to severe. Below is a closer look at one common type of injury and how it can affect a person’s life:

  • Back and Spinal Cord Injuries: These injuries are frequently caused by the sudden force of a crash. Victims may suffer from herniated discs, nerve damage, or spinal fractures, which can lead to chronic pain or reduced mobility. Recovery often involves physical therapy, medication, and, in some cases, surgery. For some individuals, these injuries can permanently affect their ability to work or enjoy daily activities.
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Concussions and other forms of brain trauma can result from hitting the steering wheel, window, or dashboard. TBIs can cause symptoms such as headaches, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating. In more serious cases, long-term care may be needed, especially when the injury interferes with speech, movement, or cognitive function.
  • Internal Injuries: The force of a car accident can cause internal bleeding or organ damage, especially when seat belts or airbags are involved. These injuries may not show immediate symptoms, which is why timely medical evaluation is critical. Left untreated, internal injuries can become life-threatening.
  • Fractures and Broken Bones: Common in side and head-on impacts, broken arms, legs, and ribs can keep a person out of work for weeks or months. Treatment may involve casting, surgery, or rehabilitation. These injuries can also leave lasting discomfort or reduced mobility, especially for older adults.
