Angola, NY - 7 Injured in Rollover Crash Near Thruway Service Area

Angola, NY (August 4, 2025) – Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded Sunday morning after a severe vehicle accident sent one car plunging down an embankment near the Angola Service Area along the New York State Thruway.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. on August 3, and required a rope rescue operation to reach the victims. According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle came to rest approximately 150 feet off the roadway, flipped over in a creek bed below. Photos from the scene showed the vehicle heavily damaged in the water following the crash.

Seven individuals were inside the vehicle at the time. Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies, along with the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company, performed the rope rescue to access the crash site. Those injured were transported from the scene to local hospitals by ambulance and Mercy Flight helicopters.

Emergency personnel from several departments, including the Evans Police Department, New York State Police, Eden Fire Department, Gowanda Fire Department, Eden EMS, and Erie County EMS, worked together to aid the victims and secure the area. Authorities remained at the site for hours conducting their investigation and clearing the wreckage. A full investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

We hope everyone injured in this accident makes a full recovery.

Car Accidents in New York

Motor vehicle accidents in New York are frequent, particularly during summer travel months. According to state transportation data, thousands of crashes take place on highways and interstates each year. In many of these cases, multiple agencies must coordinate emergency response. Injuries can range from minor to life-altering, and some accidents require specialized rescue tactics, like rope rescues, to assist those in difficult-to-reach locations.

Understanding how serious injuries affect your daily life, here are a few types of injuries that frequently result from rollover accidents:

  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Rollover crashes often generate powerful forces that can compress or twist the spine. Victims may suffer herniated discs, fractures, or more severe spinal trauma. These injuries can lead to temporary or permanent mobility issues and require extensive rehabilitation and medical care.
  • Head and Brain Trauma: When a vehicle rolls, occupants can strike the interior of the car or be hit by flying objects. This can result in concussions, skull fractures, or traumatic brain injuries, which might impact memory, concentration, and overall cognitive function.
  • Internal Organ Damage: The violent movement in rollover accidents can lead to internal injuries that aren’t always immediately visible. Damaged organs, internal bleeding, and other complications may require emergency surgery and prolonged hospitalization.
  • Fractures and Broken Bones: From arms and legs to ribs and pelvis, broken bones are common in rollover crashes. Recovery times vary and often involve surgery, casting, and physical therapy. Multiple fractures can extend the time away from work or family responsibilities.
  • Psychological Trauma: Serious car accidents can also cause emotional distress, including anxiety, PTSD, or depression. This may persist long after the physical wounds heal and could require counseling or therapy to manage.
